Metal Detecting Tips For Treasure Hunters

The enjoyable pastime of metal detecting is fast becoming one of the more popular hobbies these days. Not surprising really as one doesn’t need to have special skills or special physical ability in order to try out their metal detector and find buried treasure. In addition, buying a very good quality detector won’t break your bank and cost you a small fortune!. Many people discover that apart from it being a pleasurable and rewarding experience, detecting hidden metallic objects metals is also an inexpensive hobby. However before you take the plunge and get started on your hobby of finding buried treasures you would be wise to follow these ‘metal detecting tips‘.

 METAL DETECTING TIPS

1. Obtain prospecting permission from private land owners.

If you have chosen to prospect on private property, make sure you get permission from the property owner. By being courteous by seeking prior permission you will usually find that this is granted  You can also share some of your discoveries with the owner.

2. Carry out research.

Do some preliminary research with locals to check if the area has already been prospected on. Many metal-detector hobbyists usually join national clubs, or, local treasure hunting associations who generally know the best areas to prospect.

Popular hot spots for hidden treasures include:-

  • Beaches: you can locate a lot of small treasure items at the beach, such as jewelry, coins, or even metallic objects swept up onto the beach from the waves.
  • Areas with older buildings. There you may discover some rare and unusual long forgotten buried treasure  items

3. Look at some old maps.and make inquiries with local historical associations

Very useful information can be gathered from old maps as they will often reveal some places that new maps don’t. Some great potential spots for treasure hunting will also be revealed by scrutinizing them such as old churches, old schools, and many others.

In addition local historical societies can provide valuable guidance to treasure hunters as to what areas were first developed and which old roads or sites still exist today. You may also be able to obtain locally written books about the settlement and development of the area, which could reveal the existence of old buildings such as hotels, bars and restaurants which formerly would have seen a lot of traffic in one place for many people to lose treasured possessions.

4. Good reasons for metal detecting in the rain or after a good downpour.

Don’t be put off by wet conditions because it’s beneficial to do your treasure hunting either when it is raining or immediately after the rain. Why is that? The main reason is that when there are wet ground conditions, the detector becomes more sensitive to emit a signal due to the ground’s higher conductivity. In addition, the rain softens and loosens the soil, bringing those hidden treasures closer to the surface. Another big plus is that it makes digging much easier. However don’t forget to take waterproof clothing with you and also buy a waterproof cover for your metal detector.

5. Reasons for using your detector on a beach first before using it in a field.

The main reasons is because it is easier to detect hidden treasure in the sand which is also easier to dig in. In addition, as the beach is a place where more people gather, there is generally a higher chance that you’ll find more valuable items there.

6. Always use headphones with your metal detector

It is always desirable to wear headphones because most of the time, small variations in tone on the metal detector cannot be noticed especially if there is loud background noise.

7. Bring with you digging tools and other accessories.

Ensure you go properly prepared by taking the right prospecting equipment which should include nugget bottles, plastic containers, digging tools, pouches, gloves, and other accessories that can assist you during your prospecting activities.

8. Purchase a protective cap for your search coil.

As search coils are usually expensive it is advisable to get protective caps for them.

9. Get hard wearing knee pads.

As there is a lot of bending and kneeling involved with metal detecting activities it is advisable to wear hard-cap knee pads.

CONCLUSION

These are just some of the metal detecting tips that will assist you in finding more hidden treasure using your metal detector. Locating Sites For Metal Detecting.

If you enjoy hunting for hidden treasure as a weekend hobby and want to dig up more valuable items, you should experiment by trying something new in metal detecting. If you have already purchased a metal detector you should now try your hand at ‘locating sites for metal detecting’ . Although local parks and other public amenities  are already 87500909popular sites with others who also enjoy treasure hunting  you will need to consider other alternative places that could have valuable items buried underground. But how do we locate these sites ? Here are three research suggestions.:

1. Find out from the locals who have lived in the area for a long time..

People who lived in your locality for a very long time now can tell you some good spots for detecting metals. Talk to them and ask them where they used to play when they were young, where picnics and other social gatherings were held, where the church or building once stood and where old parks can be found.

 2. Contact other local part time prospectors.

It is a good idea to meet with other local prospectors, particularly the older ones, to discuss locations which have the potential to yield valuables as they may be aware of locations like caves and old building foundations that could be ideal ones to metal detect for hidden treasures.

 3. Get old maps of the local area.

This is another method to pinpoint potential areas that other treasure hunters may have missed. Look for these maps  maps at garage sales, second hand book shops and local used goods weekend markets. It is also worth while going to local libraries and historical societies because they may also have what you’re looking for.  It is a good plan to spend some time looking for a good detailed map, which shows the areas where homesteads and structures are located as well as sites visited by tourists.

FINAL PREPARATIONS

So by now you have done your initial research and have identified the places where you will be metal detecting  for valuables. The important next step is to check over your metal detector functions to ensure that your detector will work well for the locations you have selected.

31NZfH5GPgL._SL210_Also if you plan to buy a new metal detector you should be aware that there are lots of different types available in the market and at price ranges varying from around a $100 to several thousand. Also there are detectors designed for different operations depending upon the location that you will be prospecting on. Some are designed for metallic relics, coins and jewelry whilst other are for gold prospecting. There are even metal detectors for under water prospecting operations.

Metal detectors generally have two modes of detection and the prospector can choose which one he needs. The way it works is if you want to detect all types of metal objects, you can choose the all metal mode but if you only want to detect ferrous and stainless steel items, you can select the other mode.

Make sure that you also have all the metal detecting accessories that you will need.. Some of the more vital ones are good quality head phones, which help you interpret signals better; scuff cover to protect your metal detector and waterproof your control box and a trowel, which you will need for digging things up. Primarily it is for the good reasons that not only does metal detecting give you the opportunity to explore new regions on your trips but it also gives you the ability to discover new items at the same time whether it be coins, rings or other jewelry items during  beach combing activities or finding gold nuggets while fossicking for gold. There is no doubt, metal detecting is a very enjoyable leisure pastime and there are an endless number of options which you can carry out in order to enjoy it even more. With your metal detector at your side and having previously honed up on your detecting skills, all you now need to do is follow these easy tips to make your metal detecting.trip an enjoyable and hopefully profitable experience

1. Prepare With Proper Research

You need first of all arm yourself with some proper research as going to a place that you know little about can be a bad decision for you especially if you are a novice at metal detecting. It is absolutely necessary that you first of all research on these places and possible areas where you would like to do some metal detecting. It cannot be over emphasized that it is best that you first practice your metal detecting skills in places that you are most familiar with like your home, backyard or local parks. By doing this, it will certainly make you much more sensitive and aware on the things that are surrounding you.in familiar territory before venturing out into the unknown!

2. Check Out Old Maps

Next you should get an old map of the area you have chosen. Usual parks may not necessarily have the same structural features that existed several years ago. By using the old maps, you can definitely look for no longer used areas and secret passages where you can carry out your metal detecting. While this should be a great adventure in itself  you could well discover some things that will greatly astonish you. Having an adventurous streak and at the same time being careful with what you do is definitely very  important to make metal detecting an enjoyable experience for you.

3. Choose Least Crowded Places

The third one to follow is avoiding crowded areas. Visiting a place swarming with people will just make things more difficult for you since people will bedetect_author passing you by all the time and you just won’t be able to concentrate properly. To avoid that occurring, the best thing to do is to go to your selected locations early in the day or possibly late at night when few people are around. That will help ensure you that you will be be able to concentrate properly and enjoy the experience of your hobby in a quiet environment.

There is a great range of metal detectors at Amazon

One of the most exciting activities, or hobbies, is that of prospecting for Gold. Prospecting is also known as fossicking. It involves physical labor and a lot of walking or horseback riding and it can be done by panning, sifting or outcrop investigation and probing the soil using metal detectors.
Today modern prospectors rely on training, study of geology and prospecting technology. This includes geological mapping, rock assay analysis and sometimes just intuition of the prospector.

Metal Detectors are invaluable for gold prospectors. They can detect gold nuggets in the soil down to about 3 feet to 15 feet depending on the device used and the operators hearing ability.

When considering buying metal detectors one of the very first things you must take into consideration when making a decision is your budget. This may not be an easy thing for you especially if you are new to this. So, take the time out to learn about metal detecting first before finally buying any. If you are only going gold fossicking as a part time hobby then it is wise that you find a metal detector that is initially not too costly. Make sure that you do not go overboard with your hobby expenses considering that you are only a beginner. Should you, later on, consider that metal detecting is a thing for you, having gained lots of experience from previous gold prospecting trips then you can just buy another more expensive metal detector in the future.

Amazon has a great range of metal detectors that can be used for searching for gold and which, if proper research has previously been done of the ground to be explored and type of metal detector you need for the ground conditions, will greatly improve your chances of finding those elusive and precious gold nuggets. Here are a few to check out:-

I hope you enjoy looking through my store and good luck on your next prospecting trip.

Learn Metal Detecting – your choices in choosing a metal detector

When I decided to write this blog with the title of ‘Learn Metal Detecting‘ I was well aware that these days a very popular leisure pastime is either treasure hunting for hidden objects such as coins and jewellery or fossicking for gold and other precious metals using a metal detector which operates by sensing changes in magnetic waves caused by metal. This leisure activity is made even more enjoyable when valuable finds are made! However ones chances of success are highly dependent on proper research on the best places to look together with a thorough understanding of the workings of a metal detector to ensure that the correct type is purchased for what it is you are searching for.

So if you are to ‘learn metal detecting‘ what type of metal detector should you be looking for as this could involve you in a big investment and a wrong choice could take the enjoyment out of your leisure pastime if you don’t achieve the results you were hoping for?

Let us look at the different types of metal detectors are what they are useful for:-

1. BEAT FREQUENCY OSCILLATION ( BFO )

This type is a simple device which is largely used by beginners because it is easy to operate and is relatively inexpensive. It operates using two wire coils, the oscillator creating a constant signal at a set frequency and the second coil detecting the interference of this frequency caused by metallic objects, which results in a changing audio tone. However this type of detector is unable to discriminate between signals coming from base metal objects such as cans and nails and more valuable gold and silver ones!

2. VERY LOW FREQUENCY ( VLF )

This is the most commonly used type having a wide range of uses and can detect a variety of different metallic objects. It operates using two round coils of wire. The coil on the outside is the transmitter which emits a low-frequency magnetic field onto the ground. If there is a metal object under the ground this will cause the magnetic field to be reflected. The other inside coil is the receiver which amplifies any magnetic reflections caused by a hidden metallic object resulting in an audio tone being played.

However as well as these two coils, a VLF metal detector also includes an electronic circuit used to filter the signal from the receiver. This is an important feature as the circuit is essentially a “tuner” that allows the user to ignore certain levels of signal and focus only on the desired range for the metals he is searching for. As different types of metal reflect different signals, a treasure hunter can ignore signals relating to aluminium and steel objects and concentrate on the more valuable ones such as gold and silver!

3. PULSE INDUCTION ( PI )

This is more specialized type of detector frequently used by treasure hunters because of its ability to locate objects at great depths. Only one coil is generally used on these devices, the coil sending out a magnetic field into the ground and any metal underground reflects the signal. However, a great advantage of the PI units over the other types of detectors described above is that it can quickly switch modes to “listen” for the reflected signal. Using a timed pulse method, the PI device can discriminate between signals it has sent and stray signals from surrounding areas. This makes PI detectors much more accurate but also more expensive.

SUMMARY

You can see from the above the three main types of metal detectors that are used these days ranging in value from $100 to several thousand and from simple to complex! Your choice really depends on how seriously you take your leisure activity and how much you are prepared to invest in it.
